Chapter Eleven

Monica quietly closed the bedroom door behind her as Jim settled in on the couch again. She could hear him desperately trying to call the realty company and his car insurance agent as she sat on her bed and collected her thoughts. The people at Panhandle Vacation Rentals were not answering their calls again, and she was starting to panic a little. Now, with the storm damaging her accidental roommate’s guest house and his car, she was stuck with him more than ever. And the more she thought about it, the more she honestly didn’t mind.

A quick check of her reflection in the mirror over the old rattan dresser made Monica cringe. She didn’t have a lick of makeup on, was still in her pajamas and, by the looks of it, was going to be sharing her space with a man she was growing just a little bit fond of. And really, how could she not? Despite his imposing size, deep voice, and tendency to be a little bit of an oaf, he seemed well meaning, if not a little sad. With every bit of misfortune that befell him, it was getting harder and hard for her to retain her hatred.

In any case, Monica was determined not to look like a wreck that day, even if she was just going to be stuck in a rickety old house during a storm. She applied her favorite mauve lipstick and her usual BB cream and concealer but skipped the eyeliner and false lashes, just in case she felt the need for a good cry again. She examined the clothes she had left to wear; most of her vacation wardrobe was either too skimpy or too fancy for a comfortable day around the house, so she opted for a pair of workout pants and a low-cut sweater instead. Even though Monica had consciously made the decision to not try and be so attention-seeking anymore, she still couldn’t help but want to look her best around Jim. Even though they got off to a rocky start, he was still pretty cute, after all.

“Okay, thanks,” he said, hanging up his phone.

Monica ventured out to the living room, where Jim was still seated on the couch, stretching his arms over his head. His hands were the size of dinner plates, and his arms were like two tree trunks, and she looked away as he turned at the sound of her footsteps. Jim really was strong, and she shuddered a little as she thought back to when she had punched him at their very first meeting. If he had punched her back, she would have been done for.

“Any luck?” she said, striding to the fridge. Suddenly, Monica was very aware of every single movement of her body around him. Even opening the fridge and grabbing a drink felt awkward, as though she should coordinate her movements down to every last sashay.

“No. The realty company is still not answering. I got a hold of my auto insurance and reported the damage, though.
